The Miraculous Draught of Fishes

This composition shows two distinct groupings of figures. In the upper right, fishermen are seen laboring in small boats on a body of water, while the foreground is dominated by larger studies of robed men and women with children in expressive poses. The artist uses delicate line work and light washes to define the sculptural volume of the figures and their drapery.

Raphael’s designs for the Sistine Chapel tapestries, including this scene, represent the peak of the High Renaissance synthesis of classical form and Christian theology. This intellectual project, supported by the Medici papacy, sought to harmonize the beauty of the classical world with the spiritual authority of the Church, reflecting the Neoplatonic ideals circulating in Rome at the time.
