About This Work
Three nude female figures, the Graces, stand in a close group upon a bed of clouds, with one seen from the back and two facing the viewer. To their left, a winged Cupid gestures toward them while hovering in the sky. The scene is bounded by thick, lush swags of pomegranates, grapes, and gourds, creating a window-like effect into a celestial realm.
The Three Graces were a central motif in Renaissance Neoplatonism, representing the 'Liberalitas'—the circular flow of divine grace as it descends to earth and returns to the creator. Philosophers like Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola interpreted them as the triad of Pulchritudo (Beauty), Amor (Love), and Voluptas (Pleasure).
