About This Work
The fresco is divided into two realms: a celestial tier where Christ is enthroned among saints and patriarchs, and a terrestrial tier where theologians, popes, and poets debate the nature of transubstantiation. At the vertical center, the Holy Spirit descends as a dove between the enthroned Christ and an altar holding a monstrance. The vast semi-circular composition illustrates the transmission of divine truth from God the Father down to the assembled figures on earth.
Located in the Stanza della Segnatura directly opposite 'The School of Athens,' this work represents the synthesis of Theology (Divine Revelation) and Philosophy (Human Reason). It embodies the Neoplatonic concept of the 'Chain of Being' and the Renaissance effort to reconcile classical wisdom with Christian dogma, a project central to the intellectual circle of Marsilio Ficino.
