This elaborate frescoed vault uses trompe l'oeil architecture to frame religious and historical scenes, specifically the finding of the True Cross by St. Helena. Allegorical figures representing the provinces of Sicily and Campania are positioned in the side panels alongside Latin inscriptions praising their fertility and history. The decoration includes the heraldic dragon, papal tiara, and keys of Pope Gregory XIII, the commission's patron.

The vault was part of a massive cosmographic project supervised by the Dominican mathematician and cartographer Ignazio Danti. It represents the Renaissance effort to synthesize geographical knowledge (natural philosophy) with sacred history, effectively mapping the divine providence of the Italian peninsula.
