About This Work
The saint sits in deep contemplation within a crude lean-to made of unhewn logs, surrounded by a rugged wilderness. His bishop’s mitre and crosier lie discarded on the ground, signifying his renunciation of ecclesiastical power for a life of solitary prayer. A small desk holds a crucifix and rosary, while the distant landscape shows a group of figures in a valley far below.
As a work by the court engraver to Rudolf II in Prague, this print reflects the era's fascination with the 'vita contemplativa' and the Hermetic ideal of finding divine wisdom through solitude in nature. The accompanying Latin verses contrast the corruption of the city with the purity of the wilderness, a common theme in the Neostoic and spiritualist movements of the early 17th century.

Translation
SAINT VALENTINE, BISHOP. The countryside protects Valentine, while the towns drive him away; Right reigns in the country, wickedness reigns in the City. Crags and cliffs sheltered the fugitives in their caverns, And wild beasts gave their dens to the proscribed: Those horrible dragons did not harm them, And at his feet the savage tigers lay down. The flame venerated the pious, and the sea spared them; Is there something more savage than the waves, fire, and wild beasts?
