About This Work

This engraving depicts the biblical scene of Christ's entry into Jerusalem, showing Jesus in profile as he is followed by a group of apostles. In the foreground, figures kneel to lay their cloaks on the ground, while a man perched in a tree above reaches for a branch. The background features the city of Jerusalem, rendered with stylized mountains and classical monuments including a prominent obelisk.

The print was produced by the Sadeler family, a prominent dynasty of engravers who were instrumental in the dissemination of Mannerist art and who later became central figures in the intellectual circle of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. This work demonstrates the high level of technical skill and compositional complexity that the Sadelers brought to religious subjects, which were often collected by the same patrons who sought out alchemical and philosophical texts.
