This scene depicts the 'visio' or prophetic dream, a concept central to Renaissance Neoplatonic discussions on how the divine communicates with the human intellect through the imagination. Aegidius Sadeler was a key artist in the court of Rudolf II in Prague, a major center for the study of hermeticism and natural philosophy.
