The central oval frame contains a portrait of the scholar at age 61, dressed in a heavy fur-trimmed coat and an ornate lace ruff. He is flanked by the goddess Minerva with her spear and helmet, representing wisdom, and a solar figure holding a torch who personifies the transmission of knowledge. Ornate garlands of roses and thorns drape over the top, while heraldic shields and Latin mottos occupy the lower corners.

As a physician and philosopher at the imperial court of Rudolf II in Prague, Padoani was part of an elite circle where natural philosophy, medicine, and Hermeticism overlapped. The print reflects the high status of the physician-philosopher in the late Renaissance, using the Lucretian metaphor of the 'torch race' to signify the passing of intellectual tradition.
