Original fileThis expansive engraving captures the skyline of 17th-century Amsterdam, showcasing its church spires, windmills, and bustling maritime activity. In the foreground, a wide variety of vessels, from small rowboats to massive merchant men-of-war, navigate the IJ river. Above the city, a celestial assembly of figures including Mercury, Neptune, and personifications of Justice and Plenty oversee the city's prosperity from the clouds.
Created by Jan Saenredam of the Haarlem Mannerist circle, this work reflects the Dutch Golden Age's synthesis of commercial power and humanist philosophy. The inclusion of Mercury and Neptune frames the city's trade as a divinely sanctioned endeavor, echoing the Neoplatonic and Hermetic interests of the Haarlem artists who saw the material world as a reflection of higher celestial order.
