Original fileMarcus Furius Camillus is depicted on a powerful rearing horse at the left, gesturing toward a group of soldiers and a table laden with ornate gold vessels. To the right, figures are engaged with a scale, referencing the historical moment when Camillus interrupted the weighing of gold for the Brennus-led Gauls. The engraving features the dense, muscular figures and intricate linework characteristic of late 16th-century Dutch Mannerism.
This print is a prime example of the Haarlem Mannerist style, showcasing the transmission of Italian Renaissance designs to Northern Europe. The narrative serves as a Stoic moral allegory regarding the superiority of martial valor (iron) over material wealth (gold), a common theme in the Humanist tradition that informed the intellectual milieu of the Goltzius circle.

Translation
I. Saenredam sculp. Visscher excudit. Since it is the common opinion of all artists that students of painting should imitate with all diligence the excellent, singular, and facile manner and industry of Polidorus of Caravaggio in painting, H. Goltzius wished to dedicate this work, such as it is, invented and published at Rome, to them for the sake of love.
