The engraver is shown in profile within an oval frame, wearing a formal starched ruff typical of the early seventeenth century. Below the portrait, an ornate cartouche contains a Latin eulogy by humanist Theodorus Schrevelius praising the artist's skill and his focus on celestial subjects. This print was engraved by Pieter Holsteyn I as a posthumous tribute to Saenredam’s influential career.

As a central figure of the Haarlem Mannerists, Saenredam was instrumental in visualizing complex Hermetic, cosmological, and mythological themes under the tutelage of Hendrick Goltzius. The inscription's mention of his 'meditation on the stars' refers to his significant output of engravings depicting the Planets, the Elements, and the celestial order of the cosmos.
