Original fileThe young David is depicted on the right, holding a massive sword that carries the grotesque, bearded head of the giant Goliath aloft. He is met by a procession of women dressed in extravagant contemporary fashion with elaborate feathered hats and floral wreaths, some of whom hold musical scores to sing his praises. This scene captures the moment of David's return to Jerusalem following his victory, rendered in the highly stylized and elegant manner of the Dutch late Renaissance.
This engraving reflects the Haarlem Mannerist interest in heroic biblical narratives as allegories of virtue (Virtus) overcoming vice and physical might. Within the circle of Hendrick Goltzius and his pupils, such works also served as demonstrations of technical 'difficultà'—the ability to render complex poses and textures—paralleling the period's philosophical interest in the tension between the physical and the divine.
