Original fileThe upper panel shows an angel with a golden crown and a patterned red and gold robe, standing with arms extended outward, framed by flowering sprigs. The lower panel depicts an angel with dark, patterned wings folded over a blue robe, hands crossed over the chest in a gesture of devotion. Both figures have fair faces with dark hair and are rendered in a stylized, flattened perspective typical of Ottoman manuscript illustration. The background is a plain parchment tone, and the figures are separated by horizontal bands containing Ottoman Turkish text.
This illustration originates from a manuscript of the 'Aja'ib al-Makhluqat (Wonders of Creation) by Zakariya al-Qazwini, a foundational Islamic cosmographical text. It reflects the medieval Islamic classification of celestial beings, where angels are assigned specific domains and hierarchical roles within the cosmic order.

Translation
The angels of the fifth day are created in the image of children; the angel assigned to them is Shamsha'il; all of them obey him. This is their image. The angels of the seventh day are in the image of the sons of Adam; the angel assigned to them is Ruqa'il; they offer praise upon the Throne, and the angels of the sky speak to them in a language of confusion, and they inform each other of the heights of this [celestial station].
Zakariya al-Qazwini
