How the King in India, who was devoted to idolatry and all the vanity and pleasure of this world and impurity, initiated a persecution of the monks because some of his council had accepted and followed the hermit's life.

As people began to build monasteries and the assembly of monks increased, and their blessed, virtuous, and angelic life became renowned and spread throughout the entire world, even reaching as far as India, such reports awakened the Indians to similar zeal. Consequently, many of them left everything, desired the wilderness, willingly entered into it, and took up the hermit's life, so that in their mortal bodies they might receive and share in the angelic conversation manner of living and fellowship.
