...walk together in all unity, so that they may reach the eternal dwellings prepared by the Vatter der Liechter Father of Lights, a biblical title for God from the Book of James for those who love Him. These people I consider to be my fathers, my brothers, my friends, and my acquaintances. As for those who were previously my friends and brothers, I have left them. I have separated myself from them and lived in the Wüste wilderness or desert. There I waited for my God, who delivered me from the storm and the fear of the spirit, etc.
When the man of God had spoken such magnificent things fearlessly and directly, the King was moved to great anger. He wished to torture the pious man horribly and miserably. However, he took to heart Barlaam's noble heritage and honor. He began to speak to him in this way: You most unwise, deluded, wretched, and poor man, you have sought your own destruction. As I see it, you have been brought to this and led astray by chance. You have sharpened your mind and tongue to babble out these foolish and vain fables. If I had not promised you at the start of our conversation that I would remove anger and desire from the center of this council, I would certainly command your flesh to the fire. But because you anticipated me with words at the start of your speech, and because of the friendship I held for you in the beginning, I will overlook your pride and boldness. However, get up and remove yourself from my sight, so that I never see you again and do not have to destroy you miserably.
Upon this speech, the man of God went from the King into the wilderness somewhat sadly, because he had not attained the Marter-Kron martyr's crown. Nevertheless, he suffered many trials in his heart daily.
