original: "Separatio Prima"
A central alchemical illustration depicts a glass bolthead or flask. A decorative banner above the flask contains the text "30. The First Separation." Inside the flask, a black bird, likely a raven or crow, is shown diving headfirst into a layer of stylized blue and grey flames. Below the flames are three distinct horizontal layers: a thick band of gold leaf, a band of reddish-orange pigment, and a base of dark grey, billowy clouds or smoke at the very bottom of the vessel. In alchemical traditions, the raven often represents the nigredo: the blackening or putrefaction stage where the material is broken down by heat.
The First Separation: The initial process of isolating different components from a unified mass.
Alchemy: The medieval forerunner of chemistry, focused on the transformation of matter and the pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone.
Cucurbit: A gourd-shaped glass vessel used in laboratory distillation and heating.
Raven: A bird used as a symbol for the dark, initial stage of the chemical work, often associated with death and the release of spirit.
Gold Leaf: Thinly beaten gold used here to represent the presence of the solar or "perfect" principle within the material.
Flames: Symbols of the controlled heat required to catalyze the chemical reaction.
