This alchemical illustration is centered within a light rectangular border. A decorative, flowing banner at the top of the frame bears the inscription "47 Fixation." Below the banner is a large, round-bottomed glass flask, also known as a cucurbit, which features a short neck and a rounded stopper. The interior of the flask holds a dark, spherical mass with an intricate, web-like or branch-like texture. This represents a specific stage in the chemical transformation. The drawing is rendered in ink with light shading.
Fixation The process of making a volatile substance permanent and resistant to fire. It ensures the material no longer evaporates or changes when heated. Spiritually, it signifies the stabilization of the soul or the "fixing" of volatile thoughts into a solid state of being.
Alchemy A philosophical and proto-scientific practice. It seeks to turn base metals into noble ones and to discover a universal elixir for health and spiritual immortality.
Alchemical vessel Containers such as flasks or crucibles designed to hold materials during chemical reactions. These vessels often symbolize the "philosophical egg" or the womb where transformation occurs.
Flask A glass container with a wide body and a narrow neck used in laboratory work.
Cucurbit A glass or ceramic vessel used in distillation. It is shaped like a gourd and serves as the lower part of an alembic still.
