These triplicities must have been especially striking to them, because they had observed that the two most distant and largest planets, Saturn (♄) and Jupiter (♃), on their long journey through the Zodiac, always performed their conjunctions Meetings where planets appear at the same point in the sky. and oppositions Alignments where planets are on opposite sides of the Earth. within one and the same triplicity for two hundred full years (without occurring periodically in another). They then passed from that one into another, in order to mark out their conjunctions and oppositions in that one also for 200 years; likewise into the third, to do the same, and finally into the fourth, so that from there—after the completed number of conjunctions and oppositions—they would meet again at the same point of the Zodiac where they had started.

To complete all four triplicities with their periodic conjunctions and oppositions, they (these two planets) required a full 800 years. The eight-hundredth year, calculated from their first meeting, was called the great year original: "annus magnus", and in the astronomy of the ancients, the great revolution original: "Revolutio magna", or the "cycle of the greater ones."
