ON THE TERMINOLOGY OF ASTROLOGY

Affliction original: κακωσις (kakōsis), bad conditions, or the debilitation of the eleventh house.

Figure original: σχημα (schēma), the entire constitution or arrangement of the heavens at a specific moment.

Lord of the hour original: αιρετων (hairetōn).

Lord of the bounds original: ὁριοκρατωρ (horiokratōr), the planet that rules the specific "terms" or subdivisions of a zodiac sign.

Under the rays original: ὑπαυγος (hypaugos), a planet positioned close to the Sun; that is, "sub-radiated." Because this word seemed too harsh, the moderns preferred to call it Combust A planet "burnt up" by the Sun's proximity, weakening its influence.

Decans, also called decuries; these are the same. They are the individual ten-degree segments of the signs. Hali Haly Abenragel, an 11th-century Arab astrologer and Guido Guido Bonatti, a famous 13th-century Italian astrologer called these "faces" in their own custom.

Paranatellonta original: παρανατελλοντα, the constellations or star-images that rise alongside the decans.

Solstitial signs, so called because when the Sun has traveled to them, it is believed to stand still for a time before its movement to the north or its inclination to the south becomes manifest; these are Cancer and Capricorn.

Almugea, a Chaldean term for the relationships or aspects of planets to one another.

Harmful and threatening aspects: these are the square 90 degrees, the opposition 180 degrees, and the diameter.

Benevolent aspects: those which are formed from triangles trine, 120 degrees and hexagons sextile, 60 degrees.

Stars positioned in the upper hemisphere are said to "behold" the horoscope the Ascendant with a Right-hand radiation, whether it be a sextile, square, or trine.

They behold one another with Left-hand radiation when they are located in the lower hemisphere.

Platic aspect original: πλατικος (platikos), an aspect that is reckoned by sign only, where the signs themselves "see" each other even if the degrees are not exact.

Partile aspect, when the planets are separated by the exact number of degrees required for the configuration. For example, if the first degree of Aries is rising in the East, and the first degree of Libra (where a malefic planet is located) is setting into the lower hemisphere in the West, or is at a point not very distant from it.
