The greatest weakness of a planet is said to be when it is combust original: combustus; this occurs when a planet is so close to the Sun that its own light and influence are "burnt up" or hidden by the Sun’s glare.
Retrocession moving backward in the zodiac also diminishes its strength to some degree.
A planet is called combust when it is distant from the Sun by less than half of its "orb," or by that exact amount both before and after the Sun.
The half-orb for Saturn and Jupiter is nine degrees.
The half-orb for Mars, Venus, and Mercury is seven degrees.
The half-orb for the Moon is twelve degrees.
The half-orb for the Sun is fifteen degrees.
A progressing planet is one whose motion, as written in the Ephemeris a table of predicted stellar positions, is increasing.
A planet is said to be retrograding when its motion decreases.
A planetary station is said to occur when the planet is varied by no motion of degrees or minutes the moment a planet appears to stand still before changing direction.
A planet moves swiftly when its true motion is faster than its mean average motion, according to the sequence of the signs.
It is said to fall into slowness when it moves backward, or when it proceeds more slowly than its mean motion.
A planet is called increased in light when it moves away from the Sun, or the Sun moves away from it.
A planet is diminished in light when it approaches the Sun, or the Sun approaches it.
The argument of the Moon's latitude is the distance of the lunar head from the "Head of its Dragon" the North Node, the point where the Moon's path crosses the ecliptic.
Planets are called enemies when they have opposing houses. For example, Saturn and the Moon; for Cancer, the house of the Moon, is opposite to Capricorn, which is the house of Saturn.
There is also an enmity of planets by reason of their exaltations signs where a planet's influence is most powerful. In this way, Jupiter is an enemy to Mars, since Jupiter's exaltation is in Cancer and Mars's is in Capricorn, which are opposite signs.
Planets concord agree in nature, quality, substance, and power. Mars concords with the Sun in heat. Venus with the Moon in cold and humidity. Jupiter and Mercury concord in their nature.
The Moon is named from "light" original: Luna from lumine, because it shines through the reflection of the Sun's light.
The Sun original: Sol obtained its name because it alone original: solus among the stars is most powerful, like a prince and leader, or because it has its light from itself and receives it as a loan from no other.
They are called wandering or straying stars, which are commonly called planets or wanderers.
Lunar phases original: præfulxiones, which by another name they call the "faces" of the Moon. There are ten in number, namely: conjunction original: coitus, genna the first appearance of the crescent, rising, rising into horns the crescent shape, half-divided orb, divided—which is called dichotomous original: διχότομος; the first or last quarter—full moon, then half-divided orb again, and divided rising into horns. Some add an eleventh, the nearly-all-shining original: Plesiphahen, or as it pleases others, the nearly-full moon original: Plesioselinon.
Conjunction of the Moon is the name used when it is in the same degree of some sign as the Sun.
The Moon is called Genna when it has withdrawn fifteen degrees from its conjunction with the Sun.
The Moon is said to rise into horns when, now withdrawing from the Sun, it creates a six-sided figure a sextile aspect, 60 degrees.
The divided Moon is that which has departed ninety degrees from the Sun, making a square figure original: mundi sexangulam; likely referring to the quadrature or 90-degree square aspect.
The half-divided orb Moon is that which is distant by 120 degrees in sequence from the Sun, having a trine aspect symbol: △.
The Plesioselinos nearly full Moon is when it is at 150 degrees, no more than four degrees and six signs away, and not yet in opposition.
A Full Moon occurs when the Moon is distant from the Sun by 185 degrees and 2 minutes in sequence historically, opposition is 180 degrees; the author may be defining the end of the phase.
The Moon is called Apocruasis waning when it has declined one degree from its opposition with the Sun.
Epacts are the differences between the solar and lunar years.
A Solar year has 365 days.
A Lunar year has 354 days.
The difference between these is eleven days, and these are called Epacts.
Beholding signs original: Spectantium signa are those which restore the magnitudes of days and nights in equal hours. For the greatest hour—fifteen hours long—is when the Sun is in Cancer, and the shortest when the Sun is in Capricorn.
Signs are said to have equal power between themselves which have an equal ascension original: anaphoram; the time it takes for a sign to rise over the horizon, even if they follow each other in turn, such as Aries and Pisces, or Virgo and Libra. And if to three...
