Those who seek out Nature original: "Scrutatores Naturae." ought to be of the same character as Nature herself: truthful, simple, patient, and constant; and what is most important, they must be pious, God-fearing, and not harmful to their neighbor. Afterwards, let them carefully consider whether their proposal accords with Nature, and whether it is even possible. Let them learn from visible examples—namely, from what substances a thing is made, in what manner, and in what kind of vessel Nature operates.

For if you simply wish to do something just as Nature herself does, then follow Nature; but if you strive to perform something more excellent than Nature has done, observe in what and by what means a thing is improved, and it will always be accomplished within its own kind.

For example, if you desire to advance metal original: "metallum." (which is our specific intention) further in virtue than Nature has already done, it is necessary to take the metallic Nature, and this in the male and female mare & fœmina: In alchemical theory, all things are composed of active/masculine and passive/feminine principles, often equated to Sulfur and Mercury, which must be united for a successful "marriage" or transformation.; otherwise, you will accomplish nothing. For if you intend to create Metal from herbs, you will labor in vain, just as you would not produce wood from a dog or any other beast.
