Key to the Secrets of Nature

An allegorical engraving features several symbolic figures. In the upper left corner, a radiant triangle, representing the Trinity or Divine Providence, sits within a sun-like circle and emits rays of light. An angel with large wings flies across the upper half of the composition. This angel blows a long trumpet held in the right hand and holds a torch or branch in the left. Below, seated on a bank of clouds, is the figure of Father Time, or Chronos. He appears as a muscular, bearded man with large wings. He holds a scythe in his left hand and rests his head thoughtfully on his right hand. Beside him is a large celestial globe covered in tight concentric spiral lines. The entire scene is set against a background of dramatic clouds and beams of light emanating from the symbol at the top.
