For none can escape that awe-inspiring day,
But must stand together.
Oh, what a scene will then begin,
When every rank turns about!
And that day will surely be found
To be exactly like a field of war:
For face to face, as in a mirror,
You surely all must meet;
And as the day of battle is,
You will find the battle great:
No glittering sword that goes abroad,
No cannon that does roar,
Will strike more deeply into any man;
For every shot is here,
And every dart to wound the heart
Of those who are unjust:
(That day will make some millions suffer,
For you must meet in this way.)
A terrifying scene will then begin,
And fast the shots will fly;
You will want no armor made by men then,
For every armor is nearby;
Because it will all come from within men,
And every wound will go deep;
Much louder than the cannon’s roar,
The sinners will then weep.
Then the kings by whom it was settled
Must appear in terror here;
The King of Glory Jesus Christ in the air;
The prince of darkness Satan next;
Because as king he did begin,
Wanting to reign above,
And so he established his reign in men;
Then judge which king you love.
As men began with the French king,
You will see the traitor;
The traitor here now appears
To be a bloody king. Likely a reference to Napoleon Bonaparte, given the 1814 publication date.
"A meeting then will soon begin,
And men will hate Satan—
'But how shall we throw off his reign?'
The mutiny will be great.
'We slighted the love of the King above,
We cannot find mercy;
The king below—to go with him,
He will bind us in fetters,
So we do not know what to do,
But our arms must fall;
