'Oh, let the rocks and mountains come
To hide us now from everyone!'
Then who shall fight? Neither the lowly nor the high-ranking,
But these two kings must stand.—
I made them all, both great and small,
And placed them in every land;
I say, these men whom you have slain—
Now, Satan, hear your doom:
And, if you can raise them from the dust
To fight against ME, come!
No; men will lay aside their armor,
They will appear as if dead,
While they will hear the echo
Of loud hosannas from my saints:
'Blessed be our King, and blessed His reign;
He is worthy of being a God;
The Prince of Glory was once slain,
And washed us in His blood.'
They will abound with every sound,
'Thrice blessed be His name!
His garments were once dipped in blood;
From Him our armor came;
He fought the battle for us all,
And wounded our deadly foe'—
And the sound shall echo through endless ages,
From heaven and the earth below;
While hearts within will burn with love,
And happiness will be complete.
Then the sinners will mourn in silence,
And tremble at His feet,—
'Ah, happy men!' they will begin,
'If only we had followed in their footsteps,
We would now appear in triumph
With our victorious God;
We would feel no burning conscience,
But hearts inflamed with love:
Then surely His worth is now set forth
By all the host of heaven.'
For saints will praise, and angels gaze,
And trembling sinners fall:
Thus I will come with strong armies,
Until I have rescued all.
'The sinners' pain will wound my heart,
To destroy their foe;
And show him the result of his bloody reign,
While he has reigned below.
So he and I will try the cause
In that tremendous hour,
