I shall now mention one more dream. In 1794, I thought I saw a pump, the handle of which was so high that I could scarcely reach it, and it was so stiff that I could get no water from it. I thought I lay down under the handle, and all of a sudden the water gushed out and ran down in a large stream until it reached a very deep pond. There the water was muddy and frothed amazingly when the clear stream entered the pond; the pit was large and deep. I was answered—
"And is that all you know of your dream?
I shall soon explain this simple mystery;
For in your dream you know the pump was high;
But here is another mystery in it;
When you found it hard to pump it—
It is plain they pay little regard to your words;
Therefore you must surely wait in silence;
Because the handle is very high and straight;
But it will certainly move by itself,
The living water shall gush out, you know,
And it will certainly run down into the pit;
(You know the fountain was underground;)
And then it foamed, as must be known to all;
But here is a mystery you cannot explain;
Yet I will explain the mystery to you;
For in it there is a double mystery.
I say the pit resembles that of hell,
Where the infernal host surely dwells.
And will the living waters go there?
It is a mystery unknown to you.
No, no; I say, that is not what I mean;
The living waters are the living stream,
That will come from on high like a fountain;
But yet the sinners will defy it all;
And as it flows, sin will surely abound;
They will foam with fury to hear the sound.
You know you saw the scarlet dye appear,
Among the waters you saw most clearly;
And you inquired to know how it came;
You said the waters would be spoiled through it.
So you have not written your whole dream,
But your eager call is for an answer.
