Dr. [Martin] Luther in the Epistle prefixed to the Treatises of [Johann] Goch: from the Library at Uelzen. Johann Pupper von Goch was a 15th-century reformer whom Luther admired.

It has recently appeared, etc. There has recently been printed in our mother tongue a book by Johannes Tauler, who was previously a Thomist Thomist: a follower of the scholastic theology of Thomas Aquinas: But to speak frankly, I believe that a teacher such as he has hardly been born since the time of the Apostles. Note: Luther’s exact words original: "talis, qualem à seculo Apostolico vix natum esse scriptorem arbitror" (such a writer as I judge has hardly been born since the Apostolic age).

As far as the teacher Tauler is concerned, though he is not known to the theologians in the schools Referring to Scholasticism, the dominant academic theology of the medieval universities., I know nonetheless—even if he is thoroughly German—that I have found more of pure divine doctrine in him than I have found in all the books of the school-teachers at all the universities, or than may be found there.

I beg you once again, believe me in this matter, and follow me: just buy the book of Tauler, as I have also exhorted you before, etc. For that is a book in which you will find such art of pure
