An elaborate engraving centers on a large mountain with a flat, vertical face serving as a monumental tablet. The face of the mountain is inscribed with three distinct blocks of text: the top and bottom in Latin, and the middle in German.
The mountain is situated within a wide landscape. To the left, a path winds past a river where a small boat is rowed, leading toward a town with half-timbered houses and a tall church steeple. A group of figures in 17th-century attire, wearing cloaks and wide-brimmed hats, stand at the base of the mountain, observing it. In the distance are rugged, rocky peaks and a small hilltop castle.
To the right, a waterfall cascades from a rocky ledge into a pond where two swans swim. A gnarled tree grows on the right bank. In the sky to the upper right, a large dark bird flies toward the mountain. On the far right edge, a small rectangular box contains the initials "E P," likely the engraver Egidius Sadeler. A long, dense paragraph of Latin text occupies the bottom margin of the plate.
original: "VERBA SECRETORUM HERMETIS." This text is known as the "Emerald Tablet," a foundational document of Western alchemy and hermeticism.
IT IS TRUE, WITHOUT FALSEHOOD,
CERTAIN, AND MOST TRUE: THAT WHICH IS BELOW IS
AS THAT WHICH IS ABOVE; AND THAT WHICH IS
ABOVE IS AS THAT WHICH IS BELOW: TO PERPETUATE
THE MIRACLES OF THE ONE THING. AND AS ALL THINGS
WERE FROM ONE, BY THE MEDITATION OF THE ONE: SO ALL THINGS
WERE BORN FROM THIS THING, BY ADAPTATION. ITS FATHER
IS THE SUN, ITS MOTHER THE MOON. THE WIND CARRIED IT IN ITS BELLY;
ITS NURSE IS THE EARTH. THE FATHER OF ALL PERFECTION OF THE WHOLE WORLD
IS HERE. ITS POWER IS COMPLETE IF IT BE TURNED INTO EARTH. YOU SHALL SEPARATE
THE EARTH FROM THE FIRE, THE SUBTLE FROM THE DENSE: SWEETLY, WITH GREAT INGENUITY. IT ASCENDS
FROM THE EARTH TO HEAVEN, AND DESCENDS AGAIN TO EARTH, AND RECEIVES THE POWER
OF THE SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR. THUS YOU HAVE THE GLORY OF THE WHOLE WORLD! THEREFORE,
LET ALL OBSCURITY FLEE FROM YOU. THIS IS THE STRONG STRENGTH OF ALL STRENGTH:
BECAUSE IT WILL CONQUER EVERY SUBTLE THING, AND PENETRATE EVERY SOLID THING. THUS THE WORLD
WAS CREATED. FROM THIS SHALL BE WONDROUS ADAPTATIONS, THE METHOD OF WHICH IS HERE. THEREFORE
I AM CALLED HERMES TRISMEGISTUS, HAVING THREE PARTS OF THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE WHOLE WORLD.
THAT WHICH I HAVE SAID CONCERNING THE OPERATION OF THE SUN IS COMPLETED.
Hermes Trismegistus, or "Thrice-Greatest Hermes," is the legendary figure credited with the authorship of these hermetic writings.
Truly, without lying, certain and most true: that which is BELOW is like the ABOVE,
And that which is ABOVE is like the BELOW: so that one can attain and perform the miracles or wonders
OF A SINGLE THING. And just as ALL THINGS were created from ONE THING ALONE,
through the will and command of THE ONE WHO THOUGHT IT: so all things spring and come from
that same ONE THING, through arrangement and union. The SUN is its FATHER, and
the MOON is its MOTHER; the WIND carried it in its belly: Its NOURISHER or nurse
is the EARTH. This is the FATHER OF ALL PERFECTION of this whole world. ITS POWER
is PERFECT: but only when IT is transformed into EARTH. So you shall separate the earth from the FIRE, and
the subtle from the thick or coarse, quite pleasantly, with great modesty and understanding. It rises from the
EARTH into HEAVEN, and from HEAVEN again to the EARTH, and so gains the power of the Above and
Below. THUS YOU WILL HAVE ALL THE GLORY OF THE WHOLE WORLD. Therefore turn away from you
all misunderstanding and inability. This is the STRONGEST STRENGTH of all strength, for it can
overcome all subtlety, and penetrate all solid things. THUS WAS THE WORLD CREATED. From this
happen rare unions, and MANY KINDS OF WONDERS are worked: the WAY to work them
is this. And for this reason I am named HERMES TRISMEGISTUS, having three parts of the WISDOM
of the entire world. All that I have said concerning the WORK OF THE SUN is fulfilled.
original: "MERCURIUS TRISMEGISTUS in PIMANDRO." This refers to the Poimandres, the first book of the Corpus Hermeticum, where Hermes receives a revelation from the Divine Mind.
When I was reflecting on the NATURE OF THINGS, and raising the focus of my MIND to HIGHER THINGS, as my bodily senses were weary, just as
happens to those who are heavy with sleep from fullness or exhaustion: suddenly I seemed to see someone of immense magnitude
of body, who calling me by name, cried out in this manner: What is it, O Mercury, that you desire to HEAR AND BEHOLD? What
is it that you desire to LEARN and UNDERSTAND? Then I asked, Who are you? I am, he said, PIMANDER, THE MIND OF DIVINE POWER,
and see what you wish, for I MYSELF WILL BE WITH YOU EVERYWHERE. I said, I desire to LEARN THE NATURE OF THINGS, AND TO KNOW GOD.
To these things he replied: ENFOLD ME IN YOUR MIND, AND I WILL INSTRUCT YOU IN ALL THINGS THAT YOU DESIRE. When
he had said these things, he changed his form, and SUDDENLY REVEALED THE UNIVERSE.
A description of those Triumphal Stone PYRAMIDS, concerning the Radical Moisture or Universal Original Moisture of this WORLD,
Radical Moisture refers to the essential "life juice" or fluid that alchemists believed sustained all living things and was the secret to the Philosopher's Stone.
or the honey of the new Earth (which remains after the melting of the Heavens by fire, the liquefaction of the seething Elements, and the burning of the works that are on the Earth, according to Isaiah 65:17, 2 Peter 3:13, and Revelation 21:1) hidden and cherished in the central womb; rare throughout the world. Here are the brightest torches of divine doctrine concerning the more solid Magnesia, the proper Subject of the Universal Philosopher's STONE, and from there concerning the First-Material Wisdom, Catholic, solely and uniquely triumphant above all others.
Magnesia is a term used by alchemists to describe the "prime matter" or the raw material required to create the Philosopher's Stone.
These torches are like an extraordinary divine truth-teller, leading even to the universal Conflagration, Corruption, Purgation, and Renewal of this present world, like a miracle most firmly fixed, truly of Saturn, orderly, for NEPTUNE, JUNO, and VULCAN, and not by the hands of men. This is the most vigilant and laborious ALCHEMY, the Art of Arts of the Ancients; Certain, Wise, and Holy (so much so that Thomas Aquinas attested that a man either finds it sacred or it makes him holy). This is a Marvelous and Mystical work, and all of it is illustrious by the decree of the Divine Powers and the wise Light of NATURE. It has been destined as a sacred anchor and a most safe, inviolable refuge for philosophers until now. O faithful sons of doctrine, you ought to search out the USE AND FRUIT of these things from the Hieroglyphic teachings of these signs: a writing that does not deceive, faithfully warning me, the THEOsophical Philosophy, in Mind, Sense, or Will; it remains to be explored.
