Dante Alighieri; Landino, Christophoro (commentator) · 1487

A large woodcut illustration depicts the rain of fire in the Seventh Circle of Hell. The scene is framed by an elaborate border. This border features leafy scrolls, acanthus leaves, decorative pillars, and two stylized dolphins at the bottom facing a central floral motif. Within the illustration, the air is filled with falling flakes of fire. These flakes are shown as large, teardrop-shaped vertical strokes. At the top right, two figures, Dante and Virgil, are shown wearing long robes and red colored caps. They stand on a rocky ledge and look down at the tormented souls. In the center, a single naked figure kneels amidst the falling fire. The lower half of the image shows a crowd of naked souls huddled together on the ground in various states of agony. Some lie flat while others clutch one another to shelter from the fiery rain. Light red hand-coloring has been applied to the headgear and footwear of the observers, as well as to sections of the rocky landscape and the ground.
