Nor could they find or gather from them the principal thing—that is, the form of the world and the certain symmetry of its parts. But it happened to them just as if someone were to take hands, feet, a head, and other limbs from different places—painted excellently indeed, but not in comparison to a single body—with no part corresponding to the others, so that a monster rather than a human being would be composed from them. Thus, in the process of demonstration, which they call the method original: μέθοδον (methodon), they are found either to have passed over something necessary or to have admitted something alien and hardly pertaining to the matter. This would surely not have happened to them if they had followed certain principles. For if the hypotheses they assumed were not fallacious, everything following from them would undoubtedly be verified. Although these things I am saying now may be obscure, they will nevertheless become clearer in their proper place.
