As I, faithful reader, considered within myself how so many and various false books and seductive alchemical recipes—which were compiled out of the falsehood and greed of several deceivers, without even a single spark of truth—nonetheless daily come into the hands of the lovers and seekers of the natural and secret arts, False books and seductive recipes are the cause of deception: as is the one by A. O. E. The initials A.O.E. likely refer to a specific fraudulent contemporary work known to the author. through which many of them have been deceived and are still daily led astray; Therefore, I have considered that I could perform no more useful work than to kindly share with the children and heirs of the Art my "pound" This is a reference to the Parable of the Talents (or pounds) in the Bible, signifying a God-given gift or knowledge that must be invested rather than hidden., obtained and entrusted to me by the Father of Light.
