PREFACE TO THE KING

Where the unskillful, reckless, and presumptuous Apes seize only upon the SHADOWS—naked and empty—while the wiser Philosophers themselves enjoy the solid Doctrine and most pleasing fruit of the BODIES.

And so we see that truly coming to pass: That from those ones, that which they thought they had (something shadowy) original: "umbratile," meaning an imitation or something existing only in reflection., as it is not solid or sincere, is most justly snatched from their hands; while to those who handle the Bodies, every honorable and legitimate comprehension and knowledge of the shadows is granted. It is necessary, therefore, to RIGHTLY DIVIDE original: "OPΘOTOMEIN" (orthotomein). This Greek term literally means "to cut straight." It is a biblical reference to 2 Timothy 2:15, urging the scholar to "rightly divide the word of truth." (O King) between the SHADOW and the BODY: and to distinguish the boundaries, powers, and uses of each. JUSTICE is that Sword, both Royal and Imperial; it is the divine duty of this sword to provide this distinction, just as it provides many other things. And indeed, by a certain Art, the Sages themselves sometimes willingly admit SHADOWY figures within the winding curves of those very Bodies; this is so that choice Lettuce is not offered to Donkeys rudely rushing into the Gardens of the Hesperides In Greek mythology, these were sacred gardens where golden apples grew. Dee uses this to represent the "garden" of secret, high philosophy., when Thistles are enough for them. You will forgive me, O King, for convicting the World of injustice (on the authority of Christ).
