I considered removing the beginning of this short book original: "Treatise", as it is only a personal account of my spiritual journeys original: "Spiritual Travels"; Jane Lead’s term for her inner mystical and visionary experiences., which I have been accustomed to record from year to year. However, I quickly changed my mind, because I felt a spiritual prompting original: "it was mov'd upon me" that it might be useful and beneficial to some souls, and serve as an example to encourage them to engage in similar reflection original: "Recollection". Therefore, I resolved to let it stand without any alteration, according to its full and genuine meaning.

J. L. refers to the author, Jane Lead (1624–1704), a Christian mystic and founder of the Philadelphian Society.
