The accompanying engraving depicts an allegorical woman representing the art of Chemistry or Medicine. She holds a caduceus caduceus: a staff entwined by two snakes, a symbol of Hermes/Mercury associated with alchemy, wisdom, and the medical arts and is accompanied by a rooster, a symbol of vigilance and the alchemical process of the "rising sun" or the awakening of nature.
Philip Müller (1585–1659) was a noted German physician and professor. This work is a celebrated 17th-century manual on "Chymistry," a field that at the time combined what we now call chemistry with alchemical theories and pharmaceutical preparation.
