THE FORMER describes the general Nature of Diseases, or the various ways the Fortress of Health is hostilely invaded and attacked, in a new manner never before heard of or understood. Fludd often used military metaphors, such as a "fortress," to describe the human body's defense against illness.
THE LATTER depicts a universal Mirror original: "Catoptron" for Physicians or the Sick: in which the signs of morbid Meteors Fludd believed that diseases in the body mirrored weather patterns and celestial phenomena in the cosmos, which he termed "morbid meteors.", both Demonstrative and Prognostic, are clearly observed and designated in a way that is far from common and entirely unique.
A detailed copperplate engraving showing a seventeenth-century medical scene. A bearded patient lies in a large, canopied bed, attended by two women who offer him drink and sustenance. A doctor, viewed from behind and wearing a ruff and long cloak, stands at the bedside. To the left, a young attendant holds a lit candle on a stand. To the right, another servant stands by the foot of the bed with a candle and a bucket. In the bottom left foreground, a table is laden with medicinal equipment, including various jars, flasks, a mortar and pestle, and a bowl. A small dog lies resting on the floor beneath the table.
