Ecclesiasticus 39:34
...they have strengthened their torments, and in the time of destruction they pour out the power and fury of him who made them. Fire, hail, the teeth of beasts—namely, scorpions and serpents—shall feast according to his commands; they shall be prepared upon the earth in their necessity, and in their proper times they shall not pass over a word. original: "verbum"
Revelation 9
That there are also spiritual serpents and scorpions, springing up invisibly from the abyss of the devil, John testifies: "And the pit of the abyss was opened, and locusts went forth having the power of the terrestrial scorpion, to whom power was given to harm, and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man." Regarding these cursed and poisonous seeds original: "seminariis"; here referring to the source or "breeding grounds" of evil this text intends:
Job 20
"The bread of the impious in his belly shall be turned into the gall of asps within him; he shall suck the head of asps and the tongue of the viper shall kill him; when he is satisfied he shall be straitened and burn, and every pain shall rush upon him; while he was in labor, a vicious snake was brought forth," etc.
By this speech he argues that the cursed seeds of demons are full of contagion, and like spiritual asps, vipers, and snakes, they mingle themselves with food and air. Thus they contaminate the spirit of man with their poisonous breaths, by which he is forced to suffer severe heat. But King
Psalm 91
David says these things better: "You shall not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow flying in the day, nor the encounter and the midday demon original: "dæmonio Meridiano"; often interpreted as a spirit of sudden illness or spiritual despair, because he has given his Angels charge over you; you shall walk upon the asp and the basilisk, and you shall trample the lion and the dragon," etc.
By this speech he most clearly argues that spiritual asps, and basilisks, and fierce lions, and grim dragons—that is, the spirits accompanying the midday demon—are those arrows of God, sent from the South original: "à Meridie"; consistent with the previous page's assignment of Uriel to the South, which contaminate and intoxicate the spirits of men with their corrupt breath. And Jeremiah says:
Jeremiah 8:17
"Behold, I will send you serpents, cockatrices, or basilisks original: "regulos, siue basilicos", for which there is no charming, and they shall bite you." But Solomon says this more expressly:
Wisdom 11:18
"Thy almighty hand, which created the world out of invisible matter, was not unable to send upon them bears and bold lions, or newly created beasts, so full, breathing out fiery vapor, or emitting the smell of smoke, or shooting horrible sparks from their eyes; whose injury could not only exterminate them but even their sight kill through fear," etc.
By this thread of speech, the Wise Man argues that God can procreate serpents, and cockatrices, or basilisks from invisible matter—that is, produce them from their invisible nature into a visible form. Consequently, they can and are accustomed to remain both invisibly and visibly in the air, in which, by God thus willing and acting, they wound and harm in both ways.
Hence, therefore, God, coming from the South original: "à Meridie", addresses the impious man or sinner thus:
Deuteronomy 28
"Because you did not keep my commandments, I will strike you with heat and corrupt air, and I will join to you the pestilence, which shall pursue you until you perish," etc. Therefore, once the Word of God was so uttered, the effect immediately followed: for in an instant the good Angel Uriel leaves him, and the evil Angel Azazel, with his poisonous troops, immediately attacks the southern bulwark of the health-giving fortification, tears it down, and invades the fortification itself (as you see), and strikes the man with contagious and putrid sicknesses, so that he is forced to say with Job:
Job 6:4
"The arrows of the Almighty are heavier in me, their poison drinks up my spirit, and the terrors of God, set in battle array, fight against me."
In the Eastern property of God, he sometimes afflicts man and strikes him with fiery diseases: for just as the Angel of God, sometimes putting on the form of a pillar of fire, was salvation for the people of God in the desert, so on the contrary, by sending forth his fiery messengers in the form of his fiery property (by which he is called a consuming fire), he exercised his severity upon the Israelites themselves;
Leviticus 10:2
for the text says: "Fire going out from the presence of Jehovah killed the sons of Aaron," and
Numbers 11:1
as if his anger were kindled, burning against the sinning Israelites, it consumed them.
