1 In the fourth act. Scene i. Lady Vittoria comes out, annoyed from
waiting so long. She discusses the stingy love of Bonifacio and his vain
hopes. She shows herself resolved to give him a "bitter taste" original: "insapore" — likely a pun on giving him something "unsavory" or a "distasteful" trick of
his own medicine. She is together with the man pretending to be the captain of the
guards, and Giovanni Bernardo. Meanwhile, Lucia
5 arrived. Scene ii. She shows that she has not wasted her time, nor was
her labor in vain: she explains how she has informed and instructed Carubina, the
wife of Bonifacio. Scene iii. Overtaken by Bartolomeo, they depart
indignantly. Scene iiii. Bartolomeo remains, discussing his own
affairs literally "his matter," likely referring to his alchemical obsessions.
And behold, scene v. he encounters Bonifacio, and they talk for a while
10 together, mocking one another. Meanwhile, Lucia, who was not "sleeping
on the job," [10] scene vi. finds Master Bonifacio. Having been
released from Bartolomeo, he is easily persuaded by the extraordinary news
she tells him: namely, that at the very least, Lady Vittoria would have
given him her all, on the condition that he go to sleep with her that
15 night; otherwise, she would die of longing. Given the things that had
already happened regarding the magical spell referring to a fake enchantment Bonifacio believes is working, it was not difficult to make
him believe it. He was ordered to disguise himself as Giovanni Bernardo.
Lucia departs with Vittoria’s clothes to mask Carubina disguising the wife as the mistress to trick the husband. Scene vii. Bonifacio
remains, celebrating within himself the effect he sees from his
20 enchantment. Next, in scene viii. he mocks Martha, the wife of
Bartolomeo, for a while. Then it is likely he went immediately to the
mask-maker to prepare himself as Saint Cresconio A fictional or obscure saint's name used as a disguise. Scene xii.
Behold Carubina, disguised and instructed by Lucia. She displays the
beautiful flatteries and charms that this "sophisticated" that is, false or deceptive Vittoria
25 was meant to use on her alchemist-lover. She makes her way toward
Vittoria’s room. In scene xiii. Lucia remains, determined to find Giovanni
Bernardo: but behold, in scene xiiii. he arrives just in time, for he was
no less watchful over his own business than Lucia was over that of
others. Here they decide on the opportunities they must take: how
30 the people should be positioned in that place and time; then Lucia goes
to find Bonifacio and Giovanni Bernardo to arrange the other matters.
In the fifth act. Scene i. Behold Bonifacio in the habit of Giovanni
[11] Bernardo, who breathed love from his backside and every other orifice
of his person A crude Renaissance joke about Bonifacio’s foolish, overwhelming, and somewhat grotesque lust. After talking a little with Lucia, he goes
35 to the longed-for room. Meanwhile, Giovanni Bernardo "held his staff
straight" A double entendre referring to both his readiness as a lookout and his sexual desire, thinking of Carubina, and waited a long time standing guard.
While Sanguino played the rogue and Bonifacio met with his shames;
until scene ix. when Bonifacio came outside, utterly confused, with the
still-indignant Carubina. Unexpectedly for both of them, they found
