original Greek: ΕΠΙΚΑΛΟΥΜΑΙ ΣΕ ΤΟΝ ΕΝ ΤΩ ΚΕΝΕΩ ΠΝΕΥΜΑΤΙ... This text is a variation of the "Bornless Ritual" or "Prelude to the Goetia," originally found in the Greek Magical Papyri (PGM V. 96-172).
The inclusion of the name "Mathers" (ΜΑΘΕΡΣ) in the Greek text indicates this is a specific version of the ritual used by Aleister Crowley as a magical attack against his rival, S.L. MacGregor Mathers, during their schism in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
WARNING. The student is warned, and most seriously admonished, to forbear from devoting his time to a study of cheap and inaccurate copies of this book which we understand are now being offered for sale. The price at which this book is sold is unquestionably a small one, and those who obtain it for less run the risk of becoming confused by studying a book which has not been properly translated and edited. This book has been published under the editorship of Dr. de Laurence, who, without doubt, is more competent for a task of this kind than any living man.
Lauron William de Laurence (1868–1936) was a prolific publisher of occult texts. He was notorious for "pirating" the works of British occultists like Mathers and Waite, often removing their names and inserting his own as the "editor."
It is not always convenient for the student to obtain any of the precious metals, such as gold or silver to trace their Talismans and Seals upon. In fact, metal is used very little today for this purpose, and most everybody uses Virgin Parchment Paper, made from the skin of new-born lambs, as it is much more satisfactory. Again, it is many times difficult for the student to obtain any of the different things which are to be used for burning and making a suitable fumigation for the invocation of Spirits and Occult powers. Indeed, there are few who use anything now except genuine Oriental Temple Incense, for it is much better than any of the things recommended to burn by certain writers in their books on Magic. Both the Parchment Paper and the Temple Incense can be obtained of MESSRS. DE LAURENCE, SCOTT & COMPANY, and it is fully described in their large Catalogue of Occult and Spiritual books.
