"Knowing life and death," says Albedeni? Likely Al-Battani, a famous 9th-century Arab astronomer/astrologer, "you should build wisely and discern wisely."
Determine the Givers of Life vites: likely a Latinization of the Arabic 'Haylaj' (Hyleg), the planet or point that signifies the life force from five places: from the day and the degree of the day, from the Ascendant of fortune, and the oriental sign the sign rising on the eastern horizon, so that it may be foreseen.
If they are before the birth, the Givers of Life for those born in the day are in the fourth [house] from the Sun, graduated further; and for those [born at night], from the Moon of the day. The Givers of Life, if it is a nocturnal birth, are in the fourth from the Moon and the degree of the night. The Givers of Life, if it is in the rising birth and joined either in the seventh or in the tenth house, if the sign of fortune be a masculine or feminine sign. And the Giver of Life, if its lord appears as its Giver of Life, or the Moon in its exaltation or triplicity technical terms for signs where a planet has specific strengths. Then, if that lord of the Giver of Life does not appear, it is not the Giver of Life.
If the lord is not in its proper places and Mars is in the seventh, eighth, or nona [ninth house], and it was a masculine sign, it will be the Giver of Life, unless those who behold that lord of the Giver of Life are fortunes benefic planets like Jupiter or Venus. Therefore, the Giver of Life is that which appears in the Alcocoden Alkokoden: the planet that determines the length of life based on the Hyleg's position in the same way for those born at night as in the day. And if the Moon is in the midheaven or in the ninth, or in the august [majestic] places, or in the twelfth, third, seventh, or ninth, and is in a sign, it acts as the Giver of Life itself, which should behold the Alcocoden. And if you find the Giver of Life nearby, which beholds it for good fortune or misfortunes, and it was in the house of the Giver of Life, if the lord is not in this, do not look to the Giver of Life. Joined, if it is free from defect and the lord of the union is strong and free from an angle the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses or from the succeeding angles, neither retrograde nor falling nor conjoined, the union is the Giver of Life, and from that, the Giver of Life is most highly taken.
If the union is not the Giver of Life, look through the places of the Giver of Life; if it is found either in the succeeding angles and is free from misfortunes so that its part appears, the lord of the Giver of Life is of the exaltation or the Moon or the triplicity. And the Giver of Life and the part and the Alcocoden appear, and then the union was the Giver of Life more so; look into it. And if it is not so, look to the Giver of Life as you were cautioned, which presides over the birth of the native. If the Moon is an impediment, the part of the Giver of Life is no more joined through all of them. And if the Giver of Life was as we said in the generation of the giver, before it comes to misfortunes so that the fortune of the Giver of Life does not appear, the birth in that year—and certain wise men said that the Giver of Life itself was not the Giver of Life—let the Giver of Life appear if it was in the day in an angle or the midheaven. If the Giver of Life has any power either in the union in the sign of fortune, it is the Giver of Life for the degree of the manner and place in the birth in the fourth [house]. And in the day, the Giver of Life is in the angle of the earth the 4th house/Imum Coeli by degrees; it is the Giver of Life. And if it and the Alcocoden appear, namely the Giver of Life, it says that you will not find any part of the five wise [points] which are the Giver of Life. Look through the places which are in the union and its lord of fortune, and in which union and the part of the Giver of Life and the angles. And the Giver of Life itself is from the degree which goes out in the degree from the union into the unfortunate; it is certainly the Giver of Life, provided the lord be masculine in sign and is in the union and in its own house, or has no power. Or if the union and the lord in which the union sits is in the seventh and in the ninth, it will be worse for its house; they do not want fortunes nor the Giver of Life. If they are joined and through the places of fortune as previously mentioned, the Giver of Life should not appear for the born, whether it be a sign of fortune, or masculine, or whether it be of night or day, which is strong and free from misfortunes and from the life which all of their places show. The Giver of Life is that which you know as the union in the Giver of Life.
If the union was in and joined to the places of misfortune from the Sun or Moon, and if it does not come to misfortunes and there is no defect in its completed rays upon that place, then it is of that death. And if fortune appears or its completed rays to the place of misfortune, its completion is great and will liberate him from the Giver of Life. If the lord of the Giver of Life is not in the day, in the night look through the union if it is an equational birth; if indeed it is proportional, look through fortune and the union was from there. And so says Ptolemy Claudius Ptolemy, the foundational authority for medieval astrology that the Giver of Life is in that which is the union, if it be the Giver of Life to the union of fortunes and misfortunes. For he who falls into misfortunes, it shall be one of two things: either it brings evil to the daughter of death, or it admits misfortunes to him. And then he is born both of the Giver of Life and the union of misfortunes, and having completed to it in or in misfortune at the time of birth, death remains over the native. And if the union which is the Giver of Life is in the root of the birth, an unfortunate union, it will bind itself in one union or in its unfortunate sign, just as we showed in the union of the born; therefore he shall fear death from it, and he who was in the sign so that it may be found, fortune does not appear.
