from man, and that he removed it through battles against it, and through victories over it; thus he subjugated it, and brought it back into order, and under his obedience. The universal In this context, "universal" refers to a general principle or a foundational truth that applies to everything else. of faith is, that He came into the World to glorify His Humanity original: "Humanum suum." Swedenborg uses "the Human" or "Humanity" as a noun to describe the human nature the Lord assumed on earth, which became Divine through His life. which he took on in the World—that is, to unite it with the Divine from which [He came]; thus He holds Hell in order and under His obedience forever. Since this could not have been done except through Temptations admitted into His Humanity, even to the Last of them—and the last of them was the Passion of the cross—therefore He underwent that [passion]. These are the Universals of faith concerning the Lord.
The universal of faith on the part of man is that he should believe in the Lord; for through believing in Him, a conjunction A "joining together" or spiritual connection between the individual and the Divine. is made with Him, through which comes Salvation. To believe in Him is to have confidence that He saves; and because no one can have confidence except one who lives well, therefore this [living well] is also understood by "believing in Him." This the Lord also says in John:
“This is the will of the Father, that everyone who believes in the Son may have eternal life” (6:40).
And elsewhere:
“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him” (3:36).
3. THE FAITH OF THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW CHURCH IN ITS PARTICULAR FORM original: "singulari forma," referring to the specific or detailed explanation as opposed to the general summary. is this: That Jehovah God is Love itself and Wisdom itself, or that He is Good itself and Truth itself; and that He, as to Divine Truth (which is the Word, and which was God with God), descended and assumed Humanity for the purpose of restoring to order all things that were in Heaven, all things in Hell, and all things in the Church; because at that time the power of Hell prevailed over the power of Heaven, and on Earth the power of evil over the power of good, and as a result, total damnation stood before the doors and was imminent. This impending Damnation Jehovah God removed by means of His Humanity, which was Divine Truth, and thus He redeemed Angels and Men. Afterward, in His Humanity, He united Divine Truth to Divine Good, or Divine Wisdom to Divine Love, and thus He returned into His Divine (in which He was from eternity) together with and in His glorified Humanity. These things are understood by this in John:
“The Word was with God, and the Word was God: and the Word was made Flesh” (Chapter 1:1, 14);
and in the same:
“I came forth from the Father, and have come into the World; again [I leave the world and go to the Father]” original: "Exivi a Patre, & veni in Mundum; iterum [relinquam mundum, & vadam ad Patrem]." This refers to John 16:28.
