The spine of a brown leather-bound book is shown. The binding features gold-tooled decorative borders. Several gilded fleur-de-lis motifs appear within individual compartments. These motifs are stylized lilies used in heraldry. The compartments are separated by raised bands. Two central compartments contain the title of the work stamped in gold capital letters.
Handbook original: "ENCHIRIDIO". This title comes from the Greek word for a manual or a book that is small enough to be held in the hand. It was a common term for religious or practical guides during this period.
