The Benedictines of Stanbrook are a community of enclosed nuns known for their scholarly expertise and high-quality translations of religious texts. In the early 20th century, they were a leading force in making the works of the great mystics accessible to English speakers.
Father Benedict Zimmerman (1859–1937) was a prominent historian of the Discalced Carmelite Order. His "revision" ensured that the Benedictine sisters' translation correctly captured the specific theological nuances used by Saint Teresa.
At the time of this publication, the abbey was located in Worcestershire, England; the community moved to a new environmentally friendly monastery in Wass, North Yorkshire, in 2009.
