In that state, man gave names to the other creatures in Paradise as they were brought before him, according to their properties original: "proprieties"; the specific natures or characteristics of the animals. This did not cause the Fall. However, it was the proud knowledge of good and evil—with the intent for man to give law to himself and to depend no longer upon God’s commandments—which was the actual nature original: "fourme" of the temptation.
Nor can any amount of knowledge, no matter how great, make the mind of man "swell" with pride; for nothing can fill, much less expand, the soul of man except God and the contemplation of God. Therefore Solomon, speaking of the two principal senses of inquiry original: "Inquisition", the Eye and the Ear, affirms that the eye is never satisfied with seeing, nor the ear with hearing Ecclesiastes 1:8. If there is no fullness, then the container original: "Continent" is greater than the contents.
He defines knowledge itself and the mind of man (to which the senses are merely reporters) in the same way, using these words. They are placed after that calendar or schedule original: "Ephemerides"; a table showing the predicted positions of heavenly bodies or a daily record of events which he makes of the diversity of times and seasons for all actions and purposes A reference to Ecclesiastes 3, "For everything there is a season"; he concludes thus:
God has made all things beautiful or decent in the true return of their seasons. Also, he has placed the world in man's heart, yet man cannot find out the work which God works from the beginning to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:11
He declares quite clearly that God has framed the mind of man like a mirror or glass, capable of reflecting the image of the entire world, and joyful to receive its impression, just as the
