The Moon’s semicircle original: "Lunæ Hemicyclium". This refers to the top-most crescent of the Monad symbol., although here it may be as if superior and prior to the Solar circle: Nevertheless, she observes the SUN as her Lord and King: she seems to rejoice so much in his form and proximity that she emulates him in the magnitude of his semidiameter (as it appears to common men), and always turns her light toward him: she desires to be so imbued with SOLAR rays at last that, transformed as it were into him, she disappears entirely from the sky; until some days later, she appears in exactly that horned figure original: "corniculata figura". This describes the crescent shape that sits atop the Monad. which we have depicted.
AND surely with the Lunar semicircle brought to Solar completion: The evening and the morning were made one day A direct reference to the creation narrative in Genesis 1:5. Dee is equating the geometric union of Sun and Moon with the first day of Creation.. Let it therefore be the First day, on which the LIGHT of the Philosophers was made.
We see here the SUN and MOON resting upon a rectilinear Cross. Which can, appropriately enough, signify by hieroglyphic reason both the TERNARY Ternary: A set of three; here representing the two lines of the cross and the central point where they meet. and the QUATERNARY Quaternary: A set of four; here representing the four lines or "arms" extending from the center, or the four right angles they create..
[Diagram of a cross with a circle on top] This represents the middle and lower section of the Monad, showing the solar circle joined to the cross.
The TERNARY indeed: from two straight lines and a point common to both, acting as a joining point.
The QUATERNARY truly: from 4 straight lines, enclosing 4 right angles. Each being repeated twice (for this purpose); (And thus, in the same place, most secretly, even the OCTONARY original: "OCTONARIVS". A set of eight. offers itself; which I doubt our predecessors, the Magi, ever beheld; and you will note this especially.) The magical TERNARY of the first Fathers and Sages consisted of BODY, SPIRIT, and SOUL. From which we have here a manifest primary SEPTENARY original: "SEPTENARIVM". A set of seven.. Namely, from two straight lines and a common point: Then from 4 straight lines, separating themselves FROM one point. Dee is performing "arithmancy" on the cross: 3 (Ternary) + 4 (Quaternary) = 7 (Septenary). This was a common way for Renaissance magicians to find "sacred numbers" hidden within geometric shapes.
