Edward Kelly Edward Kelly (1555–1597/8), also spelled Kelley, was a prominent and controversial figure in the English Renaissance. He was an alchemist and a self-declared spirit medium who famously worked alongside the royal advisor John Dee. Kelly claimed to possess the secret of transmuting base metals into gold using a mysterious red powder, and he remains a central figure in the history of Western occultism.
Alchemy A philosophical and protoscientific tradition practiced throughout Europe, Egypt, and Asia. It aimed to purify, mature, and perfect certain objects, most notably through the "Great Work" of creating the Philosopher's Stone and the elixir of life.
