Commentary original: "Advertisement"; but to compensate for this loss, the said editor original: "peruser"—a friend as much to the author's work as to his person—has organized the materials he left behind into a clear and distinct order. He has connected the various parts and supplemented them in his own notes original: "advertisements", so that to the discerning reader nothing should seem lacking that might serve the goals of this intended treatise.
I will not even emphasize how many significant things have been added beyond what would likely have been included if the author had finished it himself. For besides the notes of the careful editor of his papers and that notable recent story of the Swedish Witches (translated from the German into the English language), there is also added a short treatise on the true and genuine concept of a spirit. This is taken from Dr. Henry More’s Manual of Metaphysics original: "Enchiridion Metaphysicum" to interest those who are more inquisitive searchers into the nature of these things.
The number of stories has also been greatly increased beyond what was originally planned by Mr. Glanvill. However, none were admitted except those that seemed very well-supported original: "attested" and highly credible to his aforementioned friend. When properly understood, these stories contain nothing that is not consistent with right reason and sound philosophy—as I have heard him earnestly declare original: "avouch"—though it would have been too tedious to have explained them all. It may be more pleasing to the reader to be left to exercise his own intelligence and ingenuity original: "wit and ingeny" upon the rest.
These are the advantages this edition of Mr. Glanvill’s Demon of Tedworth and his Considerations about Witchcraft have over any previous edition. Indeed, the last edition was so popular and quickly purchased that not a single copy could be found in all of London or Cambridge; the editor of his papers was even forced original: "fain" to take apart his own copy to provide the text for the printing press. If these suggestions original: "intimations" can move your
