CONCERNING THE

CANONICAL SCRIPTURES

DECREE

From the Council of Trent, Fourth Session.

The most holy, ecumenical, and general Synod of Trent, legitimately assembled in the Holy Spirit, with the same three Legates of the Apostolic See Representing the Pope as presiding officers of the Council. presiding over it, always keeping this goal before its eyes: that, with errors removed, the very purity of the Gospel be preserved in the Church.

Indeed, it [the Synod] has judged that the Index of sacred books should be added to this decree, so that no doubt may arise for anyone as to which books are accepted by the Synod itself. They are, indeed, those written below: Of the Old Testament: The Five of Moses, that is, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy; Joshua, Judges, Ruth; Four of Kings In the Latin tradition, these are the books of 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings.; Two of Chronicles original: "Paralipomenon", a Greek-derived name meaning "things left out".; The first and second of Ezra, which is called Nehemiah; Tobit, Judith, Esther, Job, the Davidic Psalter of one hundred and fifty Psalms, Proverbs original: "Parabolæ"., Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus Also known as the Wisdom of Sirach; not to be confused with Ecclesiastes., Isaiah, Jeremiah with Baruch, Ezekiel, Daniel; The Twelve Minor Prophets, that is, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi; Two of Maccabees, the first and second. Of the New Testament: The Four Gospels, according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; the Acts of the Apostles written by Luke the Evangelist; Fourteen Epistles of Paul the Apostle: To the Romans, two to the Corinthians, to the Galatians, to the Ephesians, to the Philippians, to the Colossians, two to the Thessalonians, two to Timothy, to Titus, to Philemon, to the Hebrews; two of Peter the Apostle; three of John the Apostle; one of James the Apostle; one of Jude the Apostle; and the Apocalypse of John the Apostle The Book of Revelation..
