its original position after chapter 8, verse 3 against the Greek Gizeh manuscript original: "G^g", as we have shown in the preceding section: also in exhibiting the same defective text of chapter 8, verse 4.
On the other hand, the Ethiopic version original: "E" preserves certain original readings lost by the Greek Gizeh manuscript and vice versa. Thus the Ethiopic and the Greek Syncellus fragment original: "G^s" rightly add "to them" original: "αὐτοῖς" after "they were born" original: "ἐγεννήθησαν" in chapter 6, verse 1 and read "King of those who rule as kings" original: "βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων" in chapter 9, verse 4 where the Greek Gizeh manuscript reads "King of the ages" original: "β. τῶν αἰώνων", and "authority over all" original: "πάντων τὴν ἐξουσίαν" in chapter 9, verse 5 where the Greek Gizeh manuscript reads "all the authority" original: "πᾶσαν τ. ἐξουσίαν", and attest "among the females" original: "ἐν ταῖς θηλείαις" in chapter 9, verse 8 and "against one another from themselves against themselves" original: "εἰς ἀλλήλους ἐξ αὐτῶν εἰς αὐτούς" in chapter 10, verse 9, which the Greek Gizeh manuscript in both cases omits. Moreover, in chapter 9, verse 11 the corruption in the Ethiopic = "the things against them" original: "τὰ εἰς αὐτούς" (for "permit them" original: "ἐᾷς αὐτούς" so the Greek Syncellus) is easy of correction, whereas the Greek Gizeh manuscript offers the hopeless "aias" original: "αιας". In the following passages the Greek Gizeh manuscript omits clauses and passages preserved by the Ethiopic. Thus it omits by homoeoteleuton homoeoteleuton: a scribal error where the eye skips from one word to a similar ending later in the text clauses in 9:1, 5; 10:16; 12:3; 14:3; 15:2; 18:3, 5, 11, and without any such intelligible ground 2:3, all of chapters 3 and 4 except six words, words and clauses in 6:1, 5; 9:8; 10:10, 19, 20; 14:14; 15:4, 8; 16:1; 19:1; 22:5, 8; 24:1, 2; 27:1. On the other hand, the Ethiopic omits words and clauses preserved by the Greek Gizeh manuscript in 1:1, 9; 5:1, 3; 10:1, 2; 13:7; 14:25; 15:11; 20:8; 22:2, 5; 26:1.
Naturally the Greek Gizeh manuscript and the Ethiopic have severally developed corruptions which it is generally possible to emend in either case by the help of the other. Thus the Ethiopic reads in 1:9 "they were firm" original: "ረሰዱ፡" for "they found" original: "ረከቡ፡"; 2:1 "they observed" original: "ጠየቁ፡" for "observe ye!" original: "ጠይቁ፡"; 9:4 "because" original: "እሰመ፡" for "Thou" original: "አንተ፡"; 12:1 and 2, 18:9 "morning" original: "ጽባሕ፡" for "fire" original: "እሳተ፡". See also notes on 14:2, 21, 24, 25; 18:7, 9, 13, 16; 19:2; 20:2, 6; 21:7, 9; 22:1, 2, 3, 5, 8; 23:4; 24:3, 5; 26:3, 4; 27:5; 30:1; 31:2, 3; 32:2. In the following passages the Ethiopic presupposes "together with" original: "ὁμοῦ μετά" for "they shall be like" original: "ὁμοῦνται" in 5:6; "the things after these" original: "τὰ μετὰ αὐτά" for "metals" original: "μέταλλα" in 8:1; "I bring up" original: "ἀνάγω" for "I might read" original: "ἀναγνῶ" in 13:4; "of mystery" original: "μυστηρίου" for "of ten thousand" original: "μυρίων" in 18:16; "as peaceful ones" original: "ὡς εἰρηναῖαι" for "into sirens" original: "εἰς σειρῆናς" in 19:2; "to the people" original: "λάῳ" for "to the chaos" original: "χάῳ" in 20:5; "hollow" original: "κοῖλοι" for "beautiful" original: "καλοί" in 22:2, 3. Corruptions of the Greek Gizeh manuscript will be found in the following passages: 1:2, 3, 5, 8, 9; 5:1; 6:8; 9:4, 6; 10:19; 13:1; 14:6, 8, 13, 15, 18, 19; 15:8, 9; 16:3; 17:3, 7; 18:4, 7, 11; 21:10; 22:5, 6, 9; 23:2; 24:3; 26:2; 31:3.1
(c) From the above facts it follows that the Greek Gizeh manuscript and the Ethiopic spring from a common ancestor which we may designate x, and that this x and the Greek Syncellus fragment proceed ultimately from the same original, the first Greek translation of
