[The serpent said] to the woman: "You will not surely die; rather,¹ for God knows that on the day² you eat from it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, and you will know good and evil." And the woman saw the tree, that it was desirable³ original: "ሐያም" (hayyam) – attractive or pleasant. and pleasing to the eye, and its fruit was good for eating; and she took from it and ate. And she covered her shame with fig leaves at first, and she gave to Adam and he ate, and his eyes were opened and he saw that he was naked. And he took fig leaves and sewed them together and made for himself a covering original: "ሞራሰ" (morasa) – a loincloth or girdle. and covered his shame.
And God cursed the serpent of the earth and was angry⁴ with it forever.⁵ And He was angry at the woman also, because she listened to the voice of the serpent;⁵ and He said to her: "I will greatly multiply your grief and your pain; in your sadness⁶ bear children, and your turning This refers to the woman's orientation or dependence toward her husband. shall be toward your husband, and he shall rule over you." And to Adam also He said: "Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from that tree from which I commanded you not to eat, let the ground be cursed by your deeds;⁷ thorns and thistles shall it sprout for you, and you shall eat your bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the earth from which you were taken; for⁸ you are earth, and into the earth you shall return."
And He made for them⁹ garments of skin¹⁰ and He clothed them¹¹ and sent them¹² out from the Garden of Eden.
