All of these dispositions in their own way are laudable and honorable; it is certainly a lack of judgment or good nature that makes them despise one another.

For those who have arrived at any true measure of real piety and virtue find such great perfection in that state, that when they see others who have reached the same degree as themselves, they will easily give them the right hand of fellowship and acknowledge them as equals, regardless of what their other intellectual capacities may be.

But for those whose either knowledge or ignorance is accompanied by such a high degree of rudeness and immorality that they despise and reproach all who are not of their own size in either category, it is only just if they find themselves lightly criticized original: "perstringed" in the parable of those two loud-singing nightingales of Arcadia note: A reference to a pastoral region in Greece, often used to symbolize a rustic or poetic setting that so rudely awakened Bathynous out of his divine dream.
