the wisdom that he previously possessed. And from a wise man, he was made foolish. And for that reason, the true God and Father, in whom consists all wisdom and all sweetness and piety, because of His great mercies, had pity on the human race; and it pleased Him that humanity should recover that which it had lost through disobedience—which is wisdom—through which a man can acquire all things, both physical and spiritual. And this He did through the mouth of the angel Raziel. This Raziel carried the Sefer original: "seffer"; Hebrew for "book", and this signifies that he carried the Book of Secrets to Adam, who was sad and grieving because he saw that he was separated and distanced from wisdom. And this book was written upon a sapphire stone. And God sent him this book so that, through the vigor and virtue of the words of this holy and most precious book, he might know how he could recover the greatest good which he had lost—both he himself and others who after him would follow the commands and footsteps of God. And they obtained this book. And through this book, with the holy and glorious names of God that are within it, Adam knew those things he wished to know, and did those things he wished to do. And likewise did the other holy fathers and prophets who possessed it, and they knew how to guard it most excellently and purely, and how to work with it as is necessary. And this book is divided into seven treatises. And the prophets used to keep each treatise by itself. But since it pleased God that this book, so holy, should be presented to King Solomon, son of King David, who was such a noble and perfect king in wisdom that
